Digestive HealthVertebral subluxations (misalignments of the spine) can have dramatic beneficial effect on the function of the digestive system. Every organ in your body requires a healthy nerve supply. It is not uncommon for me to see people who have misalignments in the spine, complaining of various ailments such as indigestion, reflux, heartburn, gastritis, colitis, symptoms of irritable bowel and constipation. The digestive system can weaken, work improperly and fall prey to a multitude of diseases. The job of the Chiropractor is to ensure that all systems of the body including the digestive system, are receiving unobstructed nerve supply. This promotes body harmony, enhanced ability to cope with stress and improved resistance to disease. Terry Rondberg, president of the World Chiropractic Alliance, explains that the spine does play a role in wellbeing. He notes that many factors affect the body's ability to maintain optimal balance. Nutrition, posture, exercise, stress, fatigue are important, but so is the health of your spine. Remember, if the nerve supply to your organs is impinged upon, no amount of drugs will correct this nerve compression. Ingesting medications such as "losec" only band-aids the symptoms of the problem, it doesn't correct the cause. Ideally, we would like to see patients off all unnecessary medications. A new study just published in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, found that taking a PPI*(*PPI = proton pump inhibitor = Losec), drug for eight weeks induced acid-related symptoms including heartburn, acid regurgitation and dyspepsia in healthy individuals soon after they stopped taking the pills!! It is vital to have your spine checked for nerve compression on a regular basis by a qualified Doctor of Chiropractic. Over a century of Chiropractic clinical observations have shown that correction of vertebral subluxations (misalignments of the spine) can have a beneficial effect on the function of the digestive system.
