Pregnancy

Chiropractic care is especially needed during pregnancy because of the many physical and chemical changes occurring in the woman's body.

During pregnancy, Chiropractic care helps maintain uterine ligament flexibility and balance. Chiropractic also reduces biomechanical stress and enhances nervous system function. When the growing baby is comfortable it can assume the optimal birthing position. In fact, studies have demonstrated that chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to significantly reduce labour time. First time mums average a 24% shorter labour, while mothers who have already given birth experience a 39% reduction in average labour time.

While chiropractic care is not a substitute for regular visits with your midwife or obstetrician, chiropractic should be a part of your overall health plan for a safe, comfortable and healthy pregnancy.

“Study after study is showing that a chiropractor is an indispensable part of the birthing team” Dr Jeanne Ohm.1

According to Sir Jay Holder M.D. Ph.D, "If a woman is pregnant, her needs are increased, because the nervous system of a woman directs the creation of the fetus and the embryo to begin with. When a woman receives Chiropractic adjustments during her pregnancy, there is also better delivery, less back pain, healthier children and less chance of miscarriage."

Research involving spinal adjustment and pregnancy, shows "manipulative therapy normalizes function of the pituitary, adrenal ovarian and placental systems. This shortens labour, and lessens the medication requirement. Postpartum depression is a rarity in patients receiving manipulative therapy."2

Another very important reason for seeing a Doctor of Chiropractic during your pregnancy is because it is drugless healthcare. Drugs, whether prescription or over-the-counter, can harm a growing fetus. There is no such thing as a safe drug.

Wellness Chiropractic care involves your Doctor of Chiropractic checking the spine for misalignments to optimize the biomechanical and nervous system function. This allows the woman's body and the developing baby every chance at functioning at 100%.
